My Popstar Fantasy

Drawing inspiration from LED walls often used in 2000's R&B and Pop music videos and concert performances, I aimed to create an interactive audiovisual exhibit that made users feel like they were American pop stars in their own right.

The visuals were audio triggered in VDMX, with a live signal coming in through a webcam. The laptop would pick up sound emitting from an external speaker. That same speaker was hooked to a mic: exhibition-goers would rap/sing into a microphone that was being run through a TC Helicon VoiceLive Play box (a popular effects unit for singers and vocalists).

The projection surface was plastic drop cloth hung over a frame made with PVC piping.

Folks would make noise and hear their voices being distorted, and watch a retro pixel art being react in time to their sound. In the evening of, one person best described it as 'talking to an alien'.
